about

Singer-pianist Kike Jambalaya, from Madrid, Spain, has just released Rock’n’Roll, Brother!, a collection of 50s classics with the original 50s feel.

As a boy, Kike (pronounced kick-eh) was fascinated first by Elvis Presley and then by Jerry Lee Lewis, whose legendary 1985 Madrid concert he attended. The “Killer” made a deep impression on him, inspiring him to become a pianist. As a matter of fact, Kike is the first Spanish musician specialized in rock and roll piano. So much so that he is known in Spain primarily as “The Spanish Jerry Lee Lewis”, although he is much more than that.

In 1989 he formed his first band, Jambalaya, a name that paid tribute to Hank Williams and that soon made it into his stage name. He made his first recodings with that group, including his first Lp, Tratado de estrecheces, a fresh and carefree rockabilly collection of self-penned songs. At that time he also made an impression on Spain’s younger audience as the hard-boiled piano man behind a pair of sunglasses in the popular TV talk show, Hablando se entiende la basca.

Things had started to roll and they have never stopped ever since. He toured and recorded with legendary rockabilly stars Wanda Jackson, Sleepy LaBeef and Sonny Fisher. He also overtook a successful two-part project devoted to Elvis Presley’s music: The 50s-oriented Blue Moon Boys and the Graceland Band, a 16-piece band that revived Elvis 70s show and recorded the album, We Remember the King. In recent years, Kike has recorded a CD trilogy devoted to American roots music: Back Home Again, a Dixieland-flavoured revision of early jazz standards; Hard Times, a deep and personal reflection on the folk legacy with a powerful, raw sound; and now Rock’n’Roll, Brother!, a release of pure, wild 50s energy. Kike has also been a member of country band Rocking Chair, which allowed him to delve in his love for country music along the lines of idols such as Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson or Johnny Cash.

Kike Jambalaya has been singing and playing boogie-woogie, rockabilly and country for three decades, against all odds, whether through his own material or paying tribute to the work of his masters. Either way, he is always for authentic, lively, direct music. Kike is a singer with a powerful but nuanced voice, and of course a mesmerizing pianist. And there’s a whole lot of rockin’ goin’ on!
